“We look forward to your visit and love the opportunity to tell you about The Mother Road and our story if you inquire.” – David and his friendly staff

Owner, David Brenner favors boutique properties, “mom & pop” establishments, or vacation rental homes when he travels, overlooking chain lodging. He looks forward to the experience of immersing himself in the local culture. Roadrunner Lodge Motel offers the same experience across time. The motel painstakingly recreates the 1960s vibe, including a radio station playing hits and commercials from that era. Our attention to detail shows. Ever since renovations began, the list of projects has been long. Each project brings out another piece of the past or improves the experience for you, our guests.

About the Property

Roadrunner Lodge Motel was originally two different properties. The older portion, on the west side, was built in 1947 as La Plaza Court. You’ll find early pictures of the property in some of our rooms and some of them show La Plaza Court’s original style with adjacent garages. Renovating La Plaza Court will be a really fun project! The bathrooms have vintage tiling and other features we will showcase when we begin the work.

Agnes Leatherwood built Leatherwood Manor in 1964. The locals tell many stories of swimming in the pool as kids here in Tucumcari. Mrs. Leatherwood had a reputation for holding some fun parties for her friends. We would love to find pictures of her famous chandelier we’ve been told hung in the living quarters!

The properties ran separately for many years. In 1985 someone bought both of them. They combined the properties into one motel and the owners extended the lobby to cover both properties. And then the old La Plaza Court lobby and living quarters became multi-room guest suites.

The property changed names many times over the years. The present owner, moved to the property in 2014 and gave it the name “Roadrunner Lodge”. At that time, it had been abandoned for over 5 years. It sure did need a lot of work!  First up, we replaced the roof. Then power the buildings up. And then fix the plumbing and turn on the water! Once that was done, we could focus on the rooms themselves. Everything had to be scrubbed and painted. We devote extensive time and investment every day to create an experience you’ll never forget. We work many plans to improve the property. Every day something gets a little better, and sometimes big changes seem to happen overnight!
